The M4-M5 Link mainline design and construct contract includes delivery of twin tunnels which will link the New M4 at Haberfield with the New M5 at St Peters, allowing the full benefits of a continuous and integrated WestConnex motorway to be realised.
Scope of works included building a walkway from one side to another with a 16m stair access into the tunnels. The original idea was to build the scaffold from the ground up but when Caledonia’s design team visited the site we discussed the option of building 2 stair accesses and craning the bridge into place. Building it as a bridge section and craning it in saved over 240 hours of labour. This also prevented blocking off the M4-M5 Link Tunnel from other trades and pedestrian access, potentially saving close to $1m in road closures during the lifespan of the project.
